Its story
Known in the Ottoman period as Cadde-i Kebir (the Grand Avenue), the street became the center of Pera's social life in the 19th century with embassies, churches, theaters and shops. It took the name İstiklal (Independence) in the early years of the Republic. Along its roughly 1.4 kilometers are buildings such as Galatasaray High School, the Church of St. Anthony, Çiçek Pasajı and the Botter Apartment. The red nostalgic tram running between Taksim and Tünel has become the street's symbol.
