Lake Büyükçekmece
Büyükçekmece, İstanbul
A large lagoon lake formed by streams descending from the Çatalca area, one of İstanbul's drinking water sources.
Safety warning
Its story
The lake formed when the lower valley of the Karasu and Delice streams turned into a bay as the sea level rose and its mouth was closed off by a spit of sand and gravel. The dam built by DSİ (State Hydraulic Works) at the mouth where it connects to the sea made the lake one of İstanbul's drinking water sources. The reed beds between the dam and the sea create a good environment for birdwatching. The Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Bridge is at the southern end of the lake.
