Its story
Known as Prinkipos in the Byzantine period, the island was associated with its monasteries, to which exiled members of the imperial family were sent. With the start of ferry services in the 19th century, it became the summer retreat of İstanbul's wealthy families, and the large wooden mansions from this period became the island's symbol. Leon Trotsky spent part of his years in exile here. Motor vehicle traffic on the island is restricted; transport is by bicycle, on foot and by electric vehicles.
