Beylerbeyi Palace

A marble palace on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, built as a summer and guest palace in the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz.

Its story
The palace was built between 1861 and 1865 to a design by Sarkis and Agop Balyan, replacing an earlier wooden palace. It was used as a summer residence and a palace for hosting foreign heads of state; Empress Eugénie of France was one of them. After being deposed, Abdülhamid II spent his last years here and died in this palace in 1918. With its hall with a pool, its sea pavilions and gardens stretching to the Bosphorus, it is visited as a museum under the National Palaces administration.
