Its story
The monument-museum was built to commemorate the Turks who lost their lives in the events that took place in and around Iğdır between 1915 and 1920; it is also known as the 'Monument and Museum of the Turkish Martyrs Massacred by Armenians'. The complex, whose foundation was laid on 1 August 1997, spreads over an area of about 14,000 m². The tips of five swords rising in the middle of an artificial hill meet at the top to form a dome shape, and the monument reaches a height of 43.5 meters; on the sword hilts are figures of soldiers representing the Hun, Göktürk, Seljuk, Ottoman and Türkiye periods. The enclosed museum section of about 350 m² contains photographs and documents relating to the period and a library. Ahlat stone was used on the surrounding walls and granite cladding on the swords; the area around the monument is laid out as a park.
