Its story
Satala is in the village of Sadak, attached to Kelkit, in a valley surrounded by mountains. In the time of the Emperor Trajan, Legio XV Apollinaris was stationed here and a permanent legionary camp was established; the camp is calculated to have covered a rectangular area of about 15.7 hectares. The city was comprehensively fortified in the 6th century in the time of Justinian I, and in 530 the Persians were defeated here. In and around the village, wall remains, the remains of a basilica long thought to be an aqueduct, and scattered mosaic fragments can be seen; the famous bronze head of the Satala Aphrodite in the British Museum was also found here in 1872. The finding of bricks stamped with the legion's mark in 1894 confirmed that the site is Satala.
