Its story
The mound, about 10 km north of İslahiye, lies at the foot of the Amanos Mountains, at the northern end of the Karasu valley. The city, anciently called Sam'al, was one of the leading royal centers of the Late Hittite period; its area of about 40 hectares was surrounded by a double wall 720–800 meters in diameter. It enjoyed its heyday in the reign of King Kilamuwa (832–810 BC) and was made subject to Assyria in the 8th century BC; the inscription of the Assyrian King Esarhaddon found here, dated 670 BC, confirmed that the city was Sam'al. The first excavations began in 1883 with Osman Hamdi Bey's investigations; excavations by the University of Chicago are ongoing.
