Its story
Şarhöyük, in the neighborhood of the same name northeast of the city, is Eskişehir's oldest known settlement; in ancient sources it appears as Dorylaion (Dorylaeum). Excavations that began in 1989 under the direction of Prof. Dr. A. Muhibbe Darga have been continued from 2004 under the direction of Prof. Dr. Taciser Tüfekçi Sivas. An amphora handle with a seal impression found in the excavations has shed light on trade on the Sakarya River in antiquity. Late Roman mosaics found in nearby construction excavations are displayed at the Archaeology Museum. The site is an excavation mound; check the access situation before visiting.
