Its story
Pessinus is an ancient city spread over the village of Ballıhisar, about 13–16 km south of Sivrihisar, and is known as one of the most important religious centers of Phrygia. The sacred stone of the Mother Goddess, believed to have fallen from the sky, was kept here; the Romans took this stone to Rome in 204 BC during the war against Carthage. The temple, examined in detail in excavations, was long thought to be the Temple of Cybele, but research has shown that it was dedicated to the imperial cult at the beginning of the 1st century AD. In front of the temple are the remains of a stepped, theater-like structure and a colonnaded square. Some of the finds are displayed at the Eskişehir Eti Archaeology Museum.
