Alemşah Kümbet
Sivrihisar, Eskişehir
A two-story kümbet north of the Ulu Mosque, commissioned in 1327 by Melikşah Bey for his brother Sultan Şah.
Its story
The Alemşah Kümbet, or Sultan Şah Tomb, was commissioned in 1327, according to its marble inscription, by Melikşah Bey for his brother Sultan Şah, who died young. In keeping with the Seljuk kümbet tradition it has two stories: below is a marble burial chamber, above a brick masjid. The fish, hook, star and ivy motifs around the arch, columns and door bear traces of old Turkish beliefs and traditions. Used by the municipality until 1974, the building was restored by the Foundations administration in 1980, and its last repair was in 2014. It can be seen on the same visit as the Ulu Mosque.
