Tortum Waterfall
Uzundere, Erzurum
One of Türkiye's most impressive waterfalls, where the waters of Lake Tortum pour over the landslide barrier from a height of about 48 m.
Safety warning
Its story
The waterfall came into being in the 18th century when a landslide mass that broke away from the slope of Mount Kemerli blocked the Tortum Stream and formed Lake Tortum; the lake's waters pour over this natural barrier into the Tev Valley. The waters, falling from a width of about 22 m and a height of 48 m, form a deep plunge pool below, and on sunny days rainbows can be seen. Local people call the waterfall 'sudökülen' ('where the water pours'). For visitors there are viewing balconies, stairs descending to the foot of the waterfall and a picnic area. As the lake's waters are also used in a hydroelectric power plant, the flow is at its highest in spring and early summer, when snowmelt is heaviest.
