Its story
Mount Kop, between Bayburt and Erzurum, was the scene in the First World War of the battles fought by the Ottoman Third Army against Russian forces, known as the 'Kop Defense'. Because of this historic value, the area was declared a historical national park by a Council of Ministers decision on 31 October 2016. The main point visitors stop at is the Kop Martyrs' Monument at the Kop Pass, at an elevation of 2,409 m on the D915 highway. The national park is the distribution area of the endemic Stachys bayburtensis (çarşak çayı) and, with 134 butterfly species, 10 of them endemic, is considered one of Türkiye's richest areas for butterflies. From the pass linking the Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia, a wide view opens over the surrounding mountains.
