Its story
The Selimiye was built on the orders of Selim II on Edirne's highest ridge, at Kavak Meydanı, where the old palace stood. Construction began in 1568; the mosque opened for worship in 1575, after the sultan's death. Sinan completed this building in his eighties and, by setting the great dome on eight piers, opened up the interior almost as a single space. The three-balconied minarets at the four corners of the courtyard can be seen from everywhere in the city. The complex includes madrasas, a darülhadis (hadith school) and an arasta; the entire group of buildings was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.
