Rüstem Paşa Caravanserai
Merkez, Edirne
A large two-courtyard Ottoman caravanserai commissioned from Mimar Sinan by Grand Vizier Rüstem Paşa in 1554.
Its story
The caravanserai was commissioned in 1554 from Mimar Sinan by Rüstem Paşa, son-in-law and grand vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent. It consists of two sections called the Büyük Han (Large Han) and Küçük Han (Small Han); dozens of rooms surround the two-story building, with shops along the front facade. Its 1972 restoration received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1980. As the building is used for accommodation today, the courtyard and facade are viewed from outside.
