Macedonian Tower
Merkez, Edirne
The only surviving corner tower of the Roman-period city walls, surrounded by excavated wall and church remains.
Its story
The Macedonian Tower is the only surviving example of the corner towers in the walls of Hadrianopolis, founded in the reign of Hadrian. When wooden stories and a clock were added to the tower in the 19th century, it became known as the Edirne Clock Tower; these additions were removed after the 1953 earthquake. Excavations in 1999–2003 uncovered Roman-period kilns, city walls and the remains of a Byzantine church around it. It is a good stop for seeing the city's Roman origins while exploring Kaleiçi.
