Its story
The roots of Edirne's Jewish community go back to Sephardic families who came from Iberia at the end of the 15th century. When the city's synagogues were damaged in the great fire of 1905, a large synagogue was built by decree of Abdülhamid II and opened in 1907. The French architect France Depré designed the building, inspired by the Leopoldstädter Tempel in Vienna. Long derelict as the community dwindled, the synagogue reopened to visitors in 2015 after restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations.
