Its story
The Ulu Mosque came into being when a large temple was converted into a mosque after the city was taken by the Muslim Arabs in 639. Comprehensively renovated in 1091 on the orders of the Great Seljuk Sultan Malikshah, the building was repaired many times after the fire and earthquake of 1115. Around its large courtyard are the Hanafi and Shafi'i sections, maqsuras and the Mesudiye and Zinciriye madrasas; its plan and facades are compared with the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. On the courtyard facades you can see reused columns from different periods, reliefs and 38 inscriptions. The courtyard also has a sundial attributed to al-Jazari. It is on Gazi Caddesi, directly opposite the Hasan Paşa Han.
