Its story
The Surp Giragos (St. Kyriakos) Church is an Armenian Apostolic church reported to have been built in the 16th century. Repaired in 1722, the building was ruined in a fire in 1881 and rebuilt with permission in 1883. Simeon of Poland, who toured the city in the 17th century, recounts that services were held simultaneously at the church's five altars. Neglected for a long time, the church was restored with the support of a foundation and the municipality and reopened in 2011. It was heavily damaged in the clashes in Sur in 2015; after a three-year restoration carried out by the state, it reopened in May 2022 and services resumed. Its large courtyard with basalt walls and its multi-aisled interior are worth seeing.
