Its story
Silvan, under the name Meyyafarikin, was an important city in the Middle Ages and the capital of the Marwanids. Although a mosque dated 1031 is known to have stood on the same site, the present Ulu Mosque was built between 1152 and 1157 by the Artuqid Emir Necmeddin Alpi. In the building, which consists of four aisles parallel to the mihrab, the section in front of the mihrab, three aisles wide, is covered by a large dome on squinches; this plan is considered an important example in the development of Anatolian mosque architecture. The main mihrab was commissioned in 1227 by the Ayyubid Emir Şahabeddin, and a second mihrab was added in the 15th century. Also popularly known as the Selahaddin-i Eyyubi (Saladin) Mosque, it is near the historic walls in the district center.
