Its story
The Lice Ulu Mosque was built in 1540 by Vakıf Ahmet Bey, emir of Atak (Entak). The square-plan building bears features of Artuqid architecture; its lower part was arranged as a public kitchen (imarethane) and was covered by six vaults, but two of these collapsed over time. Built of white nahit stone, the mosque's outbuildings also included a madrasa. The burial of Vakıf Ahmet Bey inside the mosque also gave the building the character of a tomb. Burned in 1845, the mosque was repaired and enlarged in 1875, and the minaret, not part of the original plan, was added in the mid-20th century. Heavily damaged in the 1975 Lice earthquake, the building was later repaired.
