Its story
Begun in 1551 or 1554 on the orders of Çerkes İskender Paşa, one of the governors of the Diyarbekir Province, the mosque was completed in 1557. Although some sources attribute the building to Mimar Sinan, this is not certain. The square, single-domed prayer hall is accompanied by a five-bay late-comers' portico that projects beyond the side facades; this section is of basalt, while the main walls are built of alternating black and white stones. In the courtyard to the north is an octagonal ablution pool with basins. Together with the nearby İskender Paşa Mansion and tomb, it is a quiet stop reflecting the Ottoman-period architectural fabric within Sur.
