İç Kale (Inner Citadel)
Sur, Diyarbakır
A walled inner citadel regarded as the city's first settlement, home to the Amida Mound, the Artuqid Arch and museum buildings.
Its story
İç Kale is at the northeast corner of Diyarbakır, on a ridge about 100 meters above the Tigris, and is regarded as the core of the city. On the Amida (Virantepe) Mound to its northwest, walls of an Artuqid palace, an octagonal pool and mosaics have been found. Surrounded in the Ottoman period by a new wall with sixteen towers, the area is reached through the Saray, Küpeli, Oğrun and Fetih gates. The Artuqid Arch of 1206 with its lion-and-bull reliefs, the Lion Fountain (Aslanlı Çeşme), the Church of St. George converted into an art gallery and the Hazreti Süleyman Mosque are in the same area. Opened in 2015 as a museum complex after the restoration of the old government buildings, İç Kale is now like an open-air museum explored on foot.
