Tabai Ancient City
Kale, Denizli
An ancient Carian city on top of the Kale district center; the name Tavas comes from this city's old name.
Its story
Tabai is a Carian city on the high ground where the Kale district center stands today. The name Tavas is believed to derive from Tabai via Davaz, the old name of Kale. It was one of the region's important centers in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and continued to be inhabited in the Byzantine and Turkish periods. The remains are intertwined with the Kale-i Tavas settlement in the district center; sarcophagi and sections of wall can be seen.
