Laodikeia Ancient City
Pamukkale, Denizli
A wealthy Roman city on the Lykos (Çürüksu); one of the seven churches of the Book of Revelation, on the UNESCO tentative list.
Its story
Laodikeia was built on a plateau commanding the Çürüksu (Lykos) valley, about 6 km north of Denizli city center. Founded in the Hellenistic period, the city grew rich in the Roman era through the wool and textile trade. Because it was home to one of the seven churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, it is also important for faith tourism. Two theaters, colonnaded streets, agoras and church remains uncovered by ongoing excavations can be visited. It was added to the World Heritage Tentative List in 2013.
