Its story
Yazılıkaya is an open-air sanctuary where two openings between natural rocks are decorated with reliefs showing Hittite gods. Used since the 16th century BC, the site took its present form in the mid-13th century BC, when the reliefs were carved. In the Large Gallery (Chamber A), gods line up on the west wall and goddesses on the east wall like a ceremonial procession, and in the middle the Storm God Teshub and the Sun Goddess Hepat meet; the largest relief belongs to Tudhaliya IV. The writing of the gods' names in Hurrian points to the Hurrian influence that grew stronger in the time of Queen Puduhepa. In the Small Gallery (Chamber B) are the scene of the god Sharruma embracing Tudhaliya IV and the relief of the Underworld God in the form of a sword stuck into the ground.
