Its story
Büyükkale is a rocky ridge rising in the middle of Hattusa. It was inhabited from the end of the Early Bronze Age to the Roman period; before the Hittites, it was a walled settlement in the Hattian and Assyrian trade colony periods as well. Increasingly enlarged and fortified in the Hittite Empire period, the ridge became the administrative center and palace of the great kings in the second half of the 2nd millennium BC. The many cuneiform tablets found here, with documents written in Hittite and other languages, are among the fundamental sources of Hittitology; tablets found in Hugo Winckler's excavations in 1906 proved that the remains were Hattusa, the Hittite capital. From the road climbing to the citadel, the Lower City and the Great Temple are well seen.
