Seddülbahir Castle
Eceabat, Çanakkale
An Ottoman castle built in 1659 to guard the Aegean entrance to the Strait, reopened in 2023 after a long restoration.
Its story
Seddülbahir Castle was built in 1659, together with Kumkale on the opposite shore, to strengthen the entrance to the Strait after the Venetians captured Bozcaada and Lemnos (Limni) in 1656. In 1915 the castle was heavily bombarded by the Allied fleet, and it commanded Ertuğrul Bay, where the landing took place on April 25. After an eight-year restoration begun in 2015, it opened to visitors on March 18, 2023. From the walls you can view the mouth of the Strait, Cape Helles and ships passing offshore.
