Its story
Kilitbahir, meaning 'lock of the sea', is the castle Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror had built in 1462–1463 on the European side of the Strait, directly opposite Çimenlik Castle. Together the two castles brought the narrowest part of the Strait within cannon range. With its cloverleaf-shaped inner keep and large central tower, it is one of the distinctive examples of Ottoman military architecture; under Süleyman the Magnificent it was strengthened with the Sarı Kule (Yellow Tower) and new walls. Exhibitions can be visited inside the restored castle. It is reached in a few minutes by the small ferries from Çanakkale.
