Babakale Castle and Bababurnu
Ayvacık, Çanakkale
One of the last Ottoman castles, built in the 18th century against pirates, in Babakale village at the westernmost tip of Asia.
Its story
Babakale Castle was commissioned in the 1720s, in the reign of Ahmed III, by Grand Admiral (Kaptan-ı Derya) Mustafa Paşa to protect local people from pirate raids. Inside the castle were a mosque, a hammam and a fountain supplied with water brought from 5 kilometers away for the navy's needs. Bababurnu, right next to the village and known in antiquity as Lekton, is the westernmost point of Anatolia and of the Asian continent. From the castle walls and the cape you can watch the sunset over the Aegean and a view stretching to Lesbos (Midilli).
