Its story
Alexandria Troas was founded around 306 BC by Antigonus, who brought together the people of the small surrounding settlements, and in 301 BC Lysimachus gave it this name in memory of Alexander the Great. The main port of northwestern Anatolia, the city became an important colony in the Roman period; it is also mentioned in Paul's journeys. The roughly 400-hectare site includes a large bath attributed to Herodes Atticus, an odeion, a theater, a gymnasium and a stadium uncovered by excavations. Locally called 'Eski Stambul' (Old Istanbul), its remains scattered among olive groves offer quiet exploration.
