Yeşil Mosque (Green Mosque)
Yıldırım, Bursa
Çelebi Mehmed's mosque, regarded with its tiles and sultan's loge as the peak of early Ottoman decorative art.
Its story
Yeşil Mosque was commissioned by Çelebi Mehmed in the first quarter of the 15th century and takes its name from the green tiles that once covered its minarets. Its architect was Hacı İvaz Paşa; the tile decoration of the interior is attributed to a team of craftsmen from Tabriz. The mihrab, the sultan's loge (hünkâr mahfili) and the glazed tiles on the walls are among the most refined early examples of Ottoman art. Some of the facade decoration was left unfinished because of the sultan's death. Together with the Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb) opposite and the madrasa beside it, it is part of the UNESCO site.
