Bursa Ulu Mosque (Grand Mosque)
Osmangazi, Bursa
The largest multi-domed mosque of early Ottoman architecture, with twenty domes and an indoor ablution fountain; part of the Bursa and Cumalıkızık UNESCO site.
Its story
The mosque, commissioned by Yıldırım Bayezid after the victory at Nicopolis (Niğbolu), was completed in 1399–1400. According to legend, the sultan had vowed to build twenty mosques and instead built a single building with twenty domes. Its architect is known as Ali Neccar. Beneath the central dome is an ablution fountain (şadırvan) bathed in light from a lantern that was once open; this arrangement is rare among Ottoman mosques. The walls bear numerous panels and inscriptions by famous calligraphers of different periods. Right next to the Kapalıçarşı (Covered Bazaar) and the hans district, it stands at the very center of the city's commercial and religious life.
