Fatih Mosque (Tirilye)
Mudanya, Bursa
A building in Tirilye constructed in the Byzantine period as the Church of St. Stephen and converted into a mosque.
Its story
The building used today as Fatih Mosque was built in the Byzantine period as a church dedicated to St. Stephen. Its closed Greek-cross plan and dome display the features of Middle Byzantine church architecture. It was converted into a mosque in the Ottoman period and named after Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror (Fatih). The fountain right next to it and the historic ablution basin are also part of the building group. It is a good starting point for a walk around Tirilye's historic center.
