Tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi
Osmangazi, Bursa
The side-by-side tombs on the Tophane ridge of Osman Gazi, founder of the Ottoman state, and his son Orhan Gazi.
Its story
In accordance with his will, Osman Gazi was brought from Söğüt after the capture of Bursa and buried on the site of an old monastery church inside the citadel. Orhan Gazi was buried in the tomb nearby. The original buildings were destroyed in the 1855 earthquake; the present tombs were rebuilt in a Baroque-influenced style under Sultan Abdülaziz. Mosaic remains of the old church can still be seen on the floor of Orhan Gazi's tomb. Tophane Park and the Clock Tower beside the tombs offer one of the finest viewpoints over the city and the plain.
