Its story
The basilica came to light in 2014, when the plan of a building was spotted beneath the lake surface in aerial photographs. Researchers think the building may have been built in honor of St. Neophytos, martyred in the 4th century, and later submerged in the lake by an earthquake. The remains are very close to the shore and a few meters deep; when the water is clear they can be seen from the shore or from the air. Archaeologists have proposed turning the site into an underwater museum. It is easily reached from the lakeside walkway.
