İznik Tile Kilns Excavation Site
İznik, Bursa
A site where excavations uncovered the workshops and kilns that produced the world-famous İznik tiles in the 15th–17th centuries.
Its story
In the 15th and 16th centuries İznik was the production center of the underglaze tiles that adorned Ottoman palaces, mosques and tombs. Excavations have uncovered numerous kilns in which these tiles were fired, workshop remains and misfired pieces. The structure of the kilns helps us understand the techniques and temperatures used in tile production. The site is displayed under a protective roof. The tile workshops still operating in the town today are the living continuation of this deep-rooted tradition.
