Hagia Sophia Orhan Mosque (İznik)
İznik, Bursa
A Byzantine church that hosted the Seventh Ecumenical Council in 787 and was converted into a mosque under Orhan Gazi.
Its story
Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), in the center of İznik, was built as a basilica in the 6th century under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. In 787 the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which ended the iconoclasm controversy, met in this church. After İznik passed to the Ottomans in 1331, it was converted into a mosque by Orhan Gazi and repaired in the time of Mimar Sinan. Remains of Byzantine-period frescoes and mosaic flooring can be seen inside. Standing where the city's main streets intersect, it is at the heart of a visit to İznik.
