Yıldırım Bayezid Mosque (Büyük Cami / Great Mosque)
Merkez, Bolu
The great twin-minaret mosque in the middle of the Bolu bazaar, commissioned by Yıldırım Bayezid in 1382 and rebuilt at the end of the 19th century.
Its story
The mosque that gave its name to Bolu's Büyükcami neighborhood was commissioned in 1382 by Yıldırım Bayezid (Bayezid I), who ruled the region as a prince. When the first building burned before 1899, the present single-domed, two-minaret mosque was built in its place. It is also popularly known as the Ulu Mosque, the Karakadı Mosque and the Paşa Mosque. It was repaired after the 1944 Bolu-Gerede earthquake and in later years; the painted decoration inside is striking. The mosque stands at the center of Bolu's historic bazaar fabric together with the Yukarı and Aşağı Taşhan and the Saraçhane and Kadı mosques, so it can be toured with the other buildings on a short walk.
