Zal Paşa (Tuğrul Bey) Mosque
Adilcevaz, Bitlis
A twelve-domed 16th-century Ottoman mosque of red and cream Ahlat stone at the foot of Adilcevaz Castle, on the shore of Lake Van.
Its story
The mosque, attributed to Zal Paşa, one of the viziers of Süleyman the Magnificent, stands on the lakeshore section of the Ahlat–Adilcevaz road, just below the castle, and is also locally known as the Tuğrul Bey Mosque. It is built of red and cream cut Ahlat stone. The rectangular prayer hall with four columns is covered by nine small domes, and the late-comers' portico to the north by three domes, for a total of twelve domes. Although there is a space reserved for an inscription above the entrance, no inscription was placed there, so its exact construction date is debated. The minaret at the northwest corner has a square base and decorative bands. Comprehensively repaired in 1965, the mosque is open for worship; its lakeside location is also attractive for photos.
