Ulu Kümbet (Usta Şagirt Kümbet)
Ahlat, Bitlis
A monumental tomb toward the lakeshore, dated to the last quarter of the 13th century, regarded with its cylindrical body and conical roof as the symbol of the Ahlat kümbets.
Its story
Popularly known as the Ulu Kümbet or the Usta Şagirt (Master and Apprentice) Kümbet, the building is one of the largest of the Ahlat kümbets (domed tombs) and dates to the last quarter of the 13th century. Below is the burial chamber (cenazelik), and above is the visiting floor with a body that is cylindrical inside and out; the building is covered by a conical roof. The fine stonework on its body reflects the tradition of craftsmen trained in Ahlat with local volcanic stone; the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam describes it as a building that could by itself represent the Ahlat kümbets. The Şadi Aka Kümbet, which once stood nearby and is known to have closely resembled it, has been demolished and disappeared. As it is a short distance from the Seljuk Meydan Cemetery and the museum, it is easily added to the same itinerary.
