Bitlis Ulu Mosque (Grand Mosque)
Merkez, Bitlis
One of the oldest mosques in Bitlis, built according to its inscription in the mid-12th century by Ebu'l-Muzaffer Muhammed of the Marwanids.
Its story
Located in the lowest part of the city, within the bazaar quarter at the foot of the castle, the mosque was built according to its inscription in the 1150s (AH 545) by Ebu'l-Muzaffer Muhammed. With its rectangular plan running east–west and its plain cut-stone body, it is considered one of the important examples of Seljuk-period mosque architecture in the region. The minaret, standing apart from the building to the north, was added later, at the end of the 15th century; the building was also repaired in the 17th century. Damaged during the occupation in the First World War, the mosque was comprehensively repaired in 1985. As it is still open for worship, it should be visited outside prayer times, following the dress rules.
