Ertuğrul Gazi Tomb
Söğüt, Bilecik
The tomb in Söğüt of Ertuğrul Gazi, father of Osman Gazi; symbolic graves of Kayı warriors surround it.
Its story
Ertuğrul Gazi, chief of the Kayı tribe, made Söğüt and its surroundings his homeland and died here around 1281. The tomb's first form dates back to the reigns of Osman and Orhan Gazi; the present building was largely renewed in the reign of Abdülhamid II. In the tomb's garden are symbolic graves of Ertuğrul Gazi's wife Halime Hatun and of Kayı warriors (alps). Each September the Ertuğrul Gazi Commemoration and Söğüt Festival brings participants here from all over Türkiye and the Turkic world. For this reason Söğüt is known as 'the birthplace of the Ottomans'.
