Amasra Museum
Amasra, Bartın
A museum displaying archaeological and ethnographic objects from the Hellenistic to the Ottoman period, in a listed building begun in 1884 as a naval school.
Its story
Antiquities that frequently come to light in and around Amasra have been collected since 1955, displayed first in the municipal building and since 1982 in the present building. The building is a historic structure begun in 1884 as a naval school but never completed; the Ministry of Culture bought and restored it in 1976. Its four halls hold sculptures, stelae, coins and ornaments from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Genoese periods, along with Ottoman-era ethnographic objects. The armored torso statue of the Roman Emperor Hadrian is the best-known piece in the collection. Stone works from various periods are displayed in the garden.
