Its story
Höşmerim is a milk-based dessert unique to Balıkesir, made by roasting unsalted fresh cheese with flour or semolina and cooking it with sugar. Protected by a geographical indication, it is served hot or warm, sprinkled with walnuts or pistachios. Its name is said to come from a cook trying to get the consistency right, who asked, 'hoş mu, erim?' ('is it nice, my husband?'). It can be found year-round at dessert shops in the city center.
