Its story
Miletus, at the mouth of the Büyük Menderes, was the most important harbor city of ancient Ionia; today it lies inland near the village of Balat. The first philosophers, such as Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes, and Hippodamus, regarded as the theorist of the grid plan, came from this city. The theater for about 15 thousand people, the Baths of Faustina, the agoras, the harbor monument and the Delphinion are the main remains. The city lost its importance when its harbors silted up with the alluvium of the Menderes; in the winter months the low-lying parts of the site can be underwater.
