Its story
The first stone church of the Tbeti Monastery was built before 918, during the reign of Ashot Kukhi, ruler of Tao-Klarjeti. Parts of the church were renovated and enlarged in the 11th century, and it was repaired again in the 12th and 15th centuries; in this period the monastery was one of the region's important religious and scholarly centers. Used as a mosque after Islam spread in the region, the building was damaged in 1885 when lightning struck its dome and cross arms, was abandoned in 1889, and its dome collapsed in 1953. Notable for their fine masonry, floral decoration and ram sculptures on the roof surfaces, the remains are about 14 km from central Şavşat.
