Its story
The castle, which has no inscription, is thought to have been built by the Bagratids in the Middle Ages. Peterek was taken by the Ottomans in 1549, during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, soon granted to a Georgian bey as a hereditary fief, and in 1579 became the center of a sanjak under the Çıldır Beylerbeyilik. Set on a hill overlooking the Çoruh valley below the village's central quarter, the castle has an oval plan of about 35x30 meters. The round tower at the northeast corner, about 10 meters high, is the castle's highest point; buttress towers (one square and three semicircular) and a cistern built to store water have survived. Very close to the village road, the castle can be explored freely.
