Its story
The monastery was founded in the first half of the 9th century by the priest Saba with the support of King Adarnase, on the remains of a church built in the 7th century by Bishop Nerses. It was renovated twice in the 11th century; during the 1032 repair, the architect Ivane Morchaisdze clad the facades in multicolored dressed stone. At İşhan, one of the five episcopal centers in the Çoruh basin, the frescoes in the dome and drum are largely preserved; blind arches, triangular niches and more than 20 geometric and floral motifs enliven the facades. The Georgian inscription on the door of the southwest chapel states that the chapel was dedicated to the Virgin Mary by King Gurgen I. The village sits on a high slope southeast of Yusufeli.
