Myra Ancient City
Demre, Antalya
An ancient city famous for its house-type Lycian tombs carved into sheer cliffs overlooking the Demre plain and its Roman theater.
Its story
Myra was founded around the Alakent neighborhood of Demre, on the fertile plain formed by alluvium carried by the Demre River (Myros). The Lycian rock tombs carved into the rocky slope, imitating wooden houses, are the city's symbol. The Roman theater right in front of them and its mask reliefs are worth seeing. It is also known as the city where St. Nicholas served as bishop.
