Its story
The idea for the monument was pioneered by the newspaper Yeni Gün, and following a competition launched in 1925, the design by Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel was chosen. Unveiled on 24 November 1927, the monument depicts Atatürk on horseback in military uniform. Around the base are a woman carrying an artillery shell on her back, two soldiers watching the front, and reliefs depicting the War of Independence. Because Ulus Square was the city center in the early years of the Republic, the monument is the focus of many historic photographs. The War of Independence and Republic museums are right next to it.
